6.7L Cummins Turbocharger Issues

If you’re a 6.7 Cummins owner I’m sure you have experienced, or read of someone experiencing turbocharger problems. When the issue starts, you will notice your exhaust brake is not working, when this happens there is usually a check engine light present, but not always.

Then there is always the dreaded “exceeded learned limit” code. This means the VGY has lost its original timing and has most likely jumped a tooth. The thought of installing a new actuator may have crossed your mind, however this is not a real solution. It’s more like a Band-Aid on an ax wound. The underlying issue is the VGT in the turbo is mechanically sticking. changing the actuator may make the code go away temporarily.

Our fix for this issue is the Fleece Performance Cheetah turbocharger. They manufacture this VGT turbo from the 2007.5 model year to current.

Some of the features of this turbocharger:

  • Fleece Performance Exclusive 63mm FMW Compressor Wheel Technology.
  • Brand new actuator with no actuator calibration programming required.
  • Maintains all OEM factory turbocharger functions including exhaust brake and warm-up.
  • Capable of supporting vehicle modifications up to 700 RWHP
  • 2-year Limited Warranty

Here is a great video of the 2013-2018 Fleece Cheetah from our friend Wade at Thoroughbred Diesel:

The Beauty of Aftermarket Exhaust

There are several reasons that you may be considering upgrading your exhaust and wondering if the cost is worth the benefit of enhancing your ride.  Often overlooked, the exhaust plays an important part of how a vehicle performs and functions.  The main job of the exhaust is to circulate air through the engine and exit it out the back of the vehicle.  There are a few things to consider before purchasing a new system and we want to help walk you through reasons you may just want to change out your factory exhaust.

Better Returns

By upgrading to an aftermarket exhaust, not only do you receive improved horsepower, but better fuel mileage as well.  Stock exhausts are created to perform a job.  They are more restrictive, quieter and are a better cost to the manufacturers.  Typically, a stock exhaust is made of steel which will rust over time.  After market exhausts are produced to maximize efficiency with better materials like aluminum or stainless steel.  Aftermarket exhausts allow more air to your engine, which will increase your power and fuel efficiency.  Depending on which type of exhaust you determine is best for your vehicle will depend on the increase of power and fuel economy.

Aesthetics

Once you have a ride you really care about, you most likely want to bring it to the next level.  The brilliance of the shiny exhaust and tips will be an attention grabber.  After market exhausts let you stand out in a crowd, be unique and add a level of luster to your vehicle.

Music to Your Ears

If enhanced performance and having an eye-catching ride isn’t enough, there is also a change in sound with an aftermarket exhaust.  The distinguishable sound of a superior exhaust system will turn heads.  A vehicle sounds more powerful and a bit meaner when you opt for a new exhaust system.  Who needs a great sound system when your exhaust can be music to your ears?

If you’re interested in upgrading your stock exhaust to a performance enhancing, eye catching, unmistakable sounding aftermarket exhaust, we’re here to help.

Concerning Diesel Truck Trends in 2023

Some concerning trends have been occurring here in the shop during the first half of the year. Our main goal is to keep our customers on the road and not be vulnerable to breakdowns and the frustrations that occur during those times.

4th Gen Cummins, (2010-2017): We’ve observed multiple engine failures due to a heater grid mounting bolt breaking/ melting off, falling into the intake, and passing through the engine. This causes catastrophic engine failure and requires a replacement engine. There is a great preemptive solution built by Banks, check it out here: https://www.flyingwrench.net/product-page/monster-ram-intake-system-by-banks

6.7L Ford , S&S Motorsports has come out with a replacement for the problematic CP4 injection pump. For the vehicle with the disaster kit, it’s very helpful but not 100% effective. In comes the solution from S&S Motorsports teaming up with Pure Power Technologies. They developed a CP4 to DRC Conversion. This is a no-tune application and guarantees that lubrication fuel can not get into the injectors. Check out the write-up here: https://www.flyingwrench.net/product-page/6-7-powerstroke-s-s-cp4-to-dcr-pump-conversion-by-s-s-diesel-motorsport

We’ve observed a lot of fuel-related issues. Whether it’s plugged filters or pump and injector failure, fuel-related issues are on a steady rise. So here at Flying Wrench Services and Performance, we are recommending tightening filter replacements from 10,000 miles to 5,000 until this issue abates. Filters are cheap, injectors are expensive. We have also had great luck with Dynomite Diesel’s fuel treatment, Injector Protector, check it out here: https://www.flyingwrench.net/product-page/injector-protector

All these products and more are available through the shop. If you have any questions feel free to email George: george@flyingwrench.net or Bernie : bernie@flyingwrench.net to answer any questions.
