Protect Your 6.7L Cummins with the Fleece Performance Intake and Grid Heater Kit

Folks, if you own a 6.7L Cummins-powered truck, chances are you’ve heard about — or experienced firsthand — the infamous grid heater nut failure problem. It’s one of the most common issues diesel owners run into, and unfortunately, it can become a catastrophic engine failure if left unaddressed.

At Flying Wrench, we’ve seen this issue more times than we care to admit. A failed grid heater nut can break loose, enter the engine, and cause severe internal damage that leads to expensive repairs and serious downtime. For truck owners who rely on their diesel rigs for work, towing, hauling, or everyday driving, that’s the last thing you want happening.

That’s why we strongly recommend upgrading to the Fleece Performance Intake and Grid Heater Kit before the problem turns into a major repair bill.

What Is the Fleece Performance Intake and Grid Heater Kit?

The Fleece Performance Intake and Grid Heater Kit is a complete engineered upgrade designed specifically for the 6.7L Cummins platform. This system replaces the factory grid heater setup with a much safer, higher-flow design that eliminates the risk associated with the factory-style grid heater nut.

Not only does this upgrade improve reliability, but it also enhances airflow and throttle response while maintaining excellent cold weather starting capability.

For diesel owners living in colder climates, this kit is especially valuable. The high-flow heating element helps your truck start reliably in extreme temperatures as low as -31°F, with an optional secondary heater capable of cold starts down to -35°C.

Why Cummins Owners Upgrade Their Grid Heater

The factory grid heater design on many 6.7L Cummins trucks has become a well-known weak point in the diesel community. Over time, the retaining nut on the OEM heater can loosen or fail. If that hardware enters the intake system, it can cause catastrophic damage to pistons, valves, and cylinders.

Replacing an entire engine because of a failed grid heater nut is an expensive lesson many truck owners unfortunately learn too late.

The Fleece Performance kit solves that problem entirely by eliminating the problematic OE-style grid heater hardware while also improving overall intake performance.

Benefits of the Fleece Performance Intake and Grid Heater Kit

This is one of the most complete and well-designed kits on the market today. Some of the standout features include:

  • Eliminates the risk of engine damage caused by OE-style grid heater nut failure
  • Improves throttle response and overall airflow
  • Reduces intake restriction for better engine breathing
  • Retains compatibility with factory high-pressure fuel lines
  • Avoids proprietary fuel line complications
  • Includes all required hardware and gaskets for installation
  • Features a high-flow coil heater system
  • Includes a new high-flex heater cable and grounding cable
  • Maintains a clean factory-style appearance
  • Precision-machined cast aluminum intake horn and plate
  • Includes a 1/8” NPT port for sensor installation
  • Optional secondary heater available for extreme cold-weather climates

Whether your truck is a daily driver, tow rig, farm truck, work truck, or performance diesel build, this upgrade adds peace of mind and improved drivability.

Improved Airflow and Performance

One thing many diesel owners notice after installation is improved throttle response. The factory intake system can be restrictive, especially under load or towing conditions. The high-flow design of the Fleece intake horn helps improve airflow efficiency, which can contribute to smoother power delivery and improved engine responsiveness.

While reliability is the primary reason most owners install this kit, the added airflow benefits are a major bonus.

Cold Weather Reliability Matters

If you live in an area where winter temperatures regularly drop below freezing, you already know how important a dependable cold-start system is for your diesel truck.

The Fleece Performance Intake and Grid Heater Kit was designed with cold weather performance in mind. The upgraded heater system helps maintain reliable starts even during brutal winter conditions, making it an ideal upgrade for diesel owners who depend on their trucks year-round.

For contractors, farmers, fleet operators, snow removal crews, and anyone else who can’t afford downtime during winter weather, this upgrade provides added confidence when temperatures drop.

6.7L Cummins Turbocharger Issues

If you’re a 6.7 Cummins owner I’m sure you have experienced, or read of someone experiencing turbocharger problems. When the issue starts, you will notice your exhaust brake is not working, when this happens there is usually a check engine light present, but not always.

Then there is always the dreaded “exceeded learned limit” code. This means the VGY has lost its original timing and has most likely jumped a tooth. The thought of installing a new actuator may have crossed your mind, however this is not a real solution. It’s more like a Band-Aid on an ax wound. The underlying issue is the VGT in the turbo is mechanically sticking. changing the actuator may make the code go away temporarily.

Our fix for this issue is the Fleece Performance Cheetah turbocharger. They manufacture this VGT turbo from the 2007.5 model year to current.

Some of the features of this turbocharger:

  • Fleece Performance Exclusive 63mm FMW Compressor Wheel Technology.
  • Brand new actuator with no actuator calibration programming required.
  • Maintains all OEM factory turbocharger functions including exhaust brake and warm-up.
  • Capable of supporting vehicle modifications up to 700 RWHP
  • 2-year Limited Warranty
